As President George W. Bush signed into law Nov. 6 an $87-billion spending bill to fund military operations and reconstruction in Iraq, the Defense Dept. was finalizing how it will award approximately 20 construction contracts worth about $13 billion for infrastructure work.

The new Iraq Infrastructure Reconstruction Office, led by retired Admiral David Nash, former head of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, will oversee the accelerated procurement process.

Nash's unit plans two "industry days" for contractors interested in the rebuilding work. The first session is slated for Nov. 19 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott hotel, in Arlington, Va. The second session will be in London on Nov. 21 at a location yet to be announced.

The reconstruction office expects to launch a Web site in the next several days with details on how to register for the sessions.
