Swamp Rats Tag Species on Palms

(enr.construction.com - 9/02/02 issue)

By Tom Sawyer

New software for environmental firms lets wetlands delineators capture species data on Palm OS-based PDAs.

Formation Wetland Edition, from the software division of geotechnical and environmental consultant Shannon & Wilson Inc., Saint Louis, Mo., collects vegetation, hydrology and soil data.

Tools include an automatic searching feature that allows a user to work with either a common name for a species or a Latin term. As text is entered, options appear. When the correct name is found, tapping it enters it into the record. The software includes all plants in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's standard wetlands reference list. Syncing the device to a PC lets the user print delineation forms ready for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit applications.

The price is $295. Details and a free demo are at www.sw-formations.com.
