Description: Despite a veto threat from the White House, the Senate has approved measures to provide $165 billion to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, plus about $10 billion for military and civil construction, expanded college aid for veterans and extended benefits for the unemployed. By a wider-than-expected margin of 75-22, the Senate on May 22 passed a supplemental spending bill containing the construction funds and veterans and unemployment benefits. It then cleared a second measure containing the war funds, on a 70-26 vote. Many Republicans broke with White House views and supported both bills.
