Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s planned sustainable city that broke ground on Feb. 9, is a 640-hectare mega-development valued at a $22 billion. The 10-x-1-kilometer Al Raha Beach Development nearby, a bit farther along than Masdar with several buildings in early stages of construction, is valued at $15 billion. Closer to the downtown of the capital of the United Arab Emirates, there are plans for a mega-development of more than 50 high-rises on Al Reem Island. It is called SHAMS Abu Dhabi. There, the first two towers, one of which will be the city’s tallest at 74 stories, are under construction. The town is planned for a population of 60,000.
