Engineers from the Nashville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers successfully completed repairs to a damaged lock gate on the Tennessee River Dec. 5 by calling in a little help from their friends, in the form of the Corps' Henry M. Shreve, a 550-ton floating crane from the Louisville District. "It's the only thing in the Corps inventory that could have lifted that 210-ton gate without assistance," says spokesman Dave Treadway. The gate at Wilson lock and dam was knocked off track in August after being hit by a barge. A jerry-rigged gate allowed the lock to pass vessels, but a second accident Nov. 28 shut it down completely. With the help of the Shreve the Corps fast-tracked re-installation of the repaired gate.
