Engineering News-Record's former executive
editor, James B. Sullivan, died on Aug. 15, at age 85. Sullivan
retired from the magazine in 1985 after 30 years with McGraw-Hill
Inc., 27 of those with ENR. Sullivan's career at ENR was briefly
interrupted when he served a three-year stint as general manager
of McGraw-Hill's World News Service before returning to the
magazine. For the last 10 years of his career, Sullivan was
the voice of the magazine, through its editorial page.
Before entering the ranks of management,
Sullivan was an editor in ENR's water and sanitation department.
Sullivan held a civil engineering degree from Polytechnic
Institute of New York and was a licensed professional engineer
in that state, as well as a fellow of the American Society
of Civil Engineers. "Jim had a brilliant mind and was
a mainstay of the magazine for decades," says ENR Editor
Emeritus Arthur J. Fox Jr.
