Fatal Crane Collapse Lawsuits Settled for $11.25 Million

Fru-Con Construction Corp., Ballwin, Mo., has settled wrongful death claims by the estates of three of the four workers killed in a 2004 crane collapse on the Maumee River Bridge project, according to documents obtained by the Toledo (Ohio) Blade newspaper. The accident occurred during a lift of a launching truss on the $220-million bridge project (ENR 3/1/04 p. 12). According to the Blade, Fru-Con paid the estates of two of the workers, Mike Phillips and Arden Clark II, $4.5 million each, and the estate of Robert Lipinski Jr. $2.25 million. The estate of the fourth victim, Mike Moreau, is in another probate court. Judge Jack Puffenberger of the Lucas County Probate Court, who released the settlement, could not be reached for comment.
