Chinese contractors have wrapped up the first phase of Shanghai's multi-billion-dollar Yanghsan deepwater port. Cranes began unloading cargo on Dec. 10 from the first of the project's eventual 32 berths. Contractors reclaimed 26 million cu meters of land in islands in the Qiqu archipelago, tucked in the mouth of Hangzhou Bay, to build what will be the worldÕs largest container port (ENR 8/23/04 p. 26). It is connected to the mainland by Donghai Bridge, a 32-kilometer-long causeway that includes five cable-stayed spans allowing ship passage. A multimodal transport hub and new town on the mainland support the new port.
