Article Description
A $200-billion, 12-year renewable energy program for the U.K. was outlined by Prime Minster Gordon Brown on June 26 as the way to achieve mandatory environmental targets. To raise renewable energy’s contribution from 2% to 15% by 2020, 14,000 MW of new offshore wind farms will be needed to provide half of the U.K.’s renewable electricity. By then, renewables will generate over 30% of electricity and 14% of heat. A range of measures including financial incentives and faster planning processes will foster new developments, says Brown.
