Article Description
The American Association of Airport Executives and other airport groups are sponsoring a one-day emergency summit on July 10 in Washington, D.C., to discuss the soaring price of oil. Officials from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, airports, airlines, financial groups and energy industry will also assemble a task force to create an energy-specific policy and pursue alternatives to oil for airplanes. AAAE incoming chairman Jim Elwood, director of aviation for Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, says 60 American communities have already lost air service this year because of fuel costs, and that could rise to 100 by year’s end. The task force will consider urging Congress to implement a safety-net model similar to that used for the banking industry.
