Article Description| Chinese and international search-and-rescue teams continue to sift through the remains of buildings turned to rubble by the massive earthquake that struck Sichuan province on May 12, while the first structural investigators filter into the hard-hit region. Their initial observations point to the collapse of great num-bers of buildings of non-ductile, cast-in-place-concrete columns and beams with precast concrete floor planks and unreinforced masonry walls. That type of construction was typical of many buildings erected in the 1960s and 1970s, prior to enactment of China’s seismic codes, says Tom K. Chan, vice president of Miyamoto International Inc., a Lafayette, Calif.-based structural engineer. |
