Article Description| The Dept. of Homeland Security on May 5 agreed to fund $65.7 million of a $113.9-million hybrid levee-fence along a 22-mile-long portion of the Rio Grande River in Hidalgo County, Texas. The county, which will pay for the balance, was struggling to fund repair of the ailing levees. They must be raised by several feet to receive new flood-zone certification. Despite local objections, DHS is waiving more than 30 environmental laws that would have delayed construction. The agency will approve the design, while the county will oversee operations. |
