A joint venture of one of the world’s largest power companies and an energy-focused private equity firm has committed up to $1 billion to develop utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects around the world. AES Corp., Arlington, Va., and Riverstone Holdings LLC, New York City, will each provide up to $500 million of capital for the venture, called AES Solar, over five years. JV officials say the installation sizes will range from less than 2 MW to more than 50 MW, using land-based solar pv panels to convert sunlight to electricity for delivery on the grid.
