Endangered Species Act: Changes Proposed

The Interior Dept. on Aug. 11 announced plans to revamp the Endangered Species Act to allow some federal projects to move forward more quickly. Under current requirements, projects that could negatively impact endangered species must undergo a scientific review. The department says the changes would reduce the number of unnecessary consultations so more resources could be devoted to protecting the most vulnerable species. Environmental groups say they will oppose the proposal.
