The number of major surety underwriters is set to shrink again with the April 23 announcement that Liberty Mutual Group plans to acquire Safeco for $6.2 billion in cash. The deal must be approved by insurance regulators in seven states, but no major obstacles are foreseen and the transaction should close later this year.
