Description: Hurricanes are a motivating force in Florida. With Lake Okeechobee at a near-record low because of drought, engineers of the South Florida Water Management District feared head-to tailwater differentials of heavy flow from a hurricane in the Kissimmee River’s upper basin could threaten the stability of water-control structures near the lake where tailwater elevations are low. An emergency authorization for remedial work last winter led to $25 million of fast-paced engineering and construction that is now drawing to a successful and timely close.
