Reconstruction of Grand Canyon Rim Road Completed Early - ENR | McGraw-Hill Construction

A $12-million project to widen a scenic but dangerous 7-mile route along the Grand Canyon’s south rim in northern Arizona was finished more than three weeks early, on Nov. 15. Project general contractor Fann Contracting Inc., Prescott, Ariz., expanded the former 18-ft- to 20-ft-wide roadway to 24 ft, allowing adequate right-of-way for buses, cyclists and pedestrians who often have to share that stretch because of inadequate trails. The project also improved storm drainage, enhanced bus pullouts and upgraded five miles of trails. The road was originally built in 1934-35 by the Bureau of Public Roads and the National Park Service. The contractor earned $250,000 in contract bonuses for timely completion.
