Construction Unemployment Soars As Housing Plunges - ENR | McGraw-Hill Construction

Publication Date: 22-OCT-08
Format: HTML

Description:
Construction’s unemployment rate soared to 9.9% last month, up from 8.2% last August and 5.8% from a year ago, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The industry unemployment rate is more than double what it was in September 2000. The current rate represents 970,000 blue- and white-collar workers who have been put on the street. Most of the damage came from the residential market, where employment fell 12.2% this year following a 6.7% drop in 2007, according to September data. Employment in the nonresidential building marker dropped 4.1% from a year ago.
