Description: Liu Zhihua, the former Beijing vice mayor, was given a suspended death sentence by China’s Hengshui Intermediate People’s Court for taking bribes totaling $1.02 million. Liu was in charge of Olympic construction before his arrest in 2006. However, the court says the charges were related to work on the city’s Zhongguancun Science Park from 1999 to 2006. Regional papers report that Liu’s fate was sealed when he failed to provide services for which he was bribed. Liu’s death sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment if he displays two years of “good behavior” in prison.
