Cat Unveils Electric Haul Trucks - ENR | McGraw-Hill Construction

Publication Date: 24-SEP-08
Format: HTML

Description:
Caterpillar Inc. added four 240- to 380-ton-capacity electric-drive haul trucks to its lineup at MINExpo, held Sept. 22-24 in Las Vegas. The Peoria, Ill.-based manufacturer, best known for mechanical drives, is “playing catch-up,” says Brad C. Rogers, vice president and general manager of rival LeTourneau Technologies Inc., Longview, Texas. “It’s hard to change your culture,” he adds. The trucks don’t save fuel over mechanical ones, admitted Joshua D. Wagner, Cat’s electric-drive spokesman. “But they do have 10% to 20% lower costs in labor and maintenance,” he says. The machines are to go into production in late 2010.
