Description: Washington state’s Supreme Court has upheld a lower court’s decision to award $4.8 million to 11 pipefitters at the U.S. Energy Dept.’s Hanford former nuclear complex who claimed they were laid off by site contractor Fluor Federal Services for objecting to what they claimed was unsafe work. The workers were awarded the damages by a county superior court in 2005, but Fluor appealed the verdict, claiming the award was excessive. The pipefitters had claimed they were asked to install an inappropriate valve on radioactive waste pipes at World War II-era underground waste storage tanks. Awards to individuals ranged from $89,700 to more than $553,000.
