Description: Higher steel and oil prices are rocking the Canadian construction market with nearly the same intensity as they have hit the U.S. market. In July, the price of “primary steel products” was up 23% above a year ago, according to Statistics Canada data, which is comparable to the U.S. producer price index. Statistics Canada’s most recent index for “asphalt bitumen” prices was up 39% above 2007’s level. Like the U.S., the Canadian housing market is weak, helping to pull down lumber prices 7% below July 2007’s level. Ready-mix concrete prices in Canada are up 4.9% for the year.
