Description: Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., has signed an $89-million, 18-year contract with Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls to install advanced energy-conservation systems, including biomass gasification, as part of a new Dept. of Energy initiative to increase energy efficiency at its facilities. The gasification system will use local woody material as the main source of energy and will replace an existing natural-gas steam plant. The move is expected to reduce fossil-fuel consumption by 80%. Other conservation measures include advanced electric metering, energy-efficient lighting, water-conservation measures, compressed-air cooling and HVAC improvements.
