President Bush is set to sign, possibly as early as this month, a federal student aid bill that includes a new incentive to attract students into the engineering profession. The Higher Education Reauthorization and College Opportunity Act, which cleared the House and Senate earlier this month, would provide up to $10,000 in college loan forgiveness for engineering students. The measure targets students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professions and others, such as nursing, identified as areas of “national need,” says Steven Hall, vice president of government affairs for the American Council of Engineering Companies.
