Description: Aker Solutions US Inc., Houston, is finalizing agreements for front-end engineering design of an $800-million coal gasification and liquefaction plant in West Virginia. The boards of directors of CONSOL Energy Inc., Pittsburgh, and Synthesis Energy Systems Inc., Houston, have authorized funds for the plant, which will produce 720,000 tonnes per year of methanol. The methanol may be used as feedstock for the chemical industry or could be converted to produce 100 million gallons per year of 87 octane gasoline. The project includes a terminal facility on the Ohio River. The companies hope to break ground early next year, aiming for completion in 2012.
