Description: A tiny fish in California’s San Francisco Bay Delta may be reclassified from threatened to endangered under the Federal Endangered Species Act, a move that could potentially affect Southern California’s water supply. Last summer, already in the throes of drought, the southern region was forced to limit water consumption after the state’s Dept. of Water Resources (DWR) temporarily stopped pumping water from the delta for two weeks to protect the population of juvenile delta smelt. The move prompted the mayor of Los Angeles to ask residents to cut water consumption by 10%.
