Description: The eight states surrounding the Great Lakes have ratified a landmark pact that would further regulate the region’s water supply. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) on July 9 was the last of the eight U.S. governors to ratify the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact, which provides guidelines for sustainable water use and “ensures that every Great Lakes governor has the power to stop a diversion,” Granholm says. The action now moves on to Congress for approval, while lawmakers in Canada have vowed to honor the pact.
