Description: A federal judge in Houston tasked with approving or rejecting a 2007 plea deal signed by oil giant BP plc’s North American unit to settle criminal liability in a 2005 refinery explosion will hold a hearing on July 16 to consider new case information. The blast killed 15 site employees of Fluor Corp. and Jacobs Engineering Inc. Judge Lee Rosenthal’s move follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s July 2 decision not to take up a request by blast victims to block her ruling until the high court could review it. Rosenthal will weigh the plea deal, in which the division pleads guilty to a felony violation of the Clean Air Act and pays a $50-million fine.
