President Bush issued an executive order on June 6 directing federal contractors to use an electronic system to verify that all newly hired workers and all employees, including those hired earlier, working on federal contracts are eligible to work in the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff designated the E-Verify system as the one companies should use to comply with the order. But the executive order leaves many questions unanswered, says Associated General Contractors CEO Stephen Sandherr. They include the definition of “contractor,” and whether the order applies to subcontractors, material suppliers and vendors.
