Just weeks after the U.S. Energy Dept. chose to replace a team led by URS Corp.’s Washington Group unit as incumbent manager of its Savannah River nuclear site in Aiken, S.C., the agency awarded the firm and partner EnergySolutions Federal Services the $7.1-billion cleanup of underground nuclear-waste storage tanks at its Hanford site in Richland, Wash. Washington, acquired by URS last fall, in July will begin to take over the Hanford job from incumbent and losing bidder CH2M Hill Cos. Transition of the anticipated 10-year contract is to finish in October. Still to be awarded is a $6.3-billion contract to decommission a massive plutonium-processing plant at Hanford and dig up thousands of buried radioactive waste drums, among other tasks. The ...
