Description: Investigators with the Clark County Fire Dept. have decided not to file charges over the Jan. 25 fire at the Monte Carlo hotel/casino in Las Vegas, despite apparent violations. Investigators say they got conflicting stories from workers on the job and will not levy fines against either the owner, MGM Mirage Inc., or the local contractor, Union Erectors LLC. The contractor was welding atop the 32-story hotel roof when molten steel fragments from a handheld torch fell and ignited the blaze. The contractor was welding under a window-washing permit instead of a “hot” permit, which can take four to five weeks to process, say county fire officials.
