Description: Two engineering officials of the New York City Transportation Dept. pleaded guilty on March 24 to charges of being involved in a $400,000 bribery scheme to settle a contractor’s $16-million payment dispute on a bridge renovation initially valued at $118 million. Under plea agreements, Balram Chandiramani, NYCDOT director of movable bridges, and Uday Shah, assistant civil engineer, each face maximum sentences of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, says Benton Campbell, U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn, N.Y. The former officials allegedly met with an executive of bridge contractor Kiska Construction Corp., Long Island City, N.Y., to help broker payment of its claim in exchange for the cash.
