Opponents of building code changes adopted following post-Sept. 11, 2001, safety concerns saw mixed results during the International Code Council’s code development hearings held Feb. 17-March 2 in Palm Springs, Calif. A proposal to eliminate a third-exit-stairway requirement in buildings taller than 420 ft was defeated as was a proposal to remove a requirement for high-bond strengths for spray-on fireproofing in tall buildings. Both codes were added as a supplement to the 2007 IBC last year and were recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Md., following its investigation of the collapse of the World Trade Center in New York City.
