Description: The provision for a third exit stair in buildings taller than 420 ft, first added to the 2007 supplement to the model International Building Code, will become part of the 2009 IBC. Other actions at the International Code Council’s code development hearings, held Feb. 17-March 2 in Palm Springs, Calif., will keep a requirement for higher bond strengths for sprayed-on fireproofing based upon building height. That also was in the 2007 supplement. A proposal to insert a section on building-security risk assessments was shot down. Two proposals for new sections addressing increased structural integrity also were defeated. All the proposals were made in the aftermath of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
