Fire and Structure: Five Responses to the 7 World Trade Center Collapse Report - ENR | McGraw-Hill Construction

Publication Date: 03-SEP-08
Author:  Compiled and introduced by Nadine M. Post
Format: HTML

Description:
After three years of study, the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md., has determined that the 47-story Seven World Trade Center collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001 because of thermal expansion related to the fires triggered by the collapse of the 110-story One WTC. The heat from the fires, which burned unchecked for seven hours, caused steel floor beams and girders to expand, leading to a chain of events that caused a key structural column on the 13th floor to fail. This initiated a fire-induced structural collapse, says NIST.
