Description: A vast aluminum smelter is taking shape in Abu Dhabi. The developer is Emirates Aluminum, a 50-50 joint venture of Mubadala Development Co., an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi government, and Dubai Aluminum. A joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and WorleyParsons holds the engineering, procurement and construction management contract for the first of two phases. The 6 sq km site is at the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah, a nascent hub for shipping, logistics and industrial development. The smelter will produce sow, standard ingots, billet and sheet ingots. The project includes a 2,000 MW gas-fired combined- cycle powerplant, with turbines supplied by General Electric.
